Bring out yer dead!

Irony of the day:

I’m updating my personal information for graduate school through the online account system. In the personal information section, there is a section called “Emergency Contacts.” In the relationship category, I find “deceased spouse.”

um. what?

If I had a deceased spouse, how the crap are you going to contact her in case of emergency?

I can see it now … I’d be laying in a hospital bed somewhere and graduate school officials will be in the waiting room with the Ouija boards attempting to contact my “deceased spouse.”

Wow.

Big Garbage Week

April 16th, 2005 by knomat

If you’ve lived in Huntingdon or attended Juniata College, you’re quite familiar with what I refer to as “Big Garbage Week.” There are many other names for it, but the idea is simple - once a year, residents of the town are permitted to put all the trash not fit for a typical trash bag in front of their home in order to be hauled away by the borough maintenance crew. Destroyed furniture, worn out childrens toys, matresses, christmas trees (I’m not kidding), lawn ornaments that have seen their days, kitchen appliances - anything and everything can be seen lining the streets of Huntingdon this week. Mountains of trash are on every block.

No big deal, right? You wouldn’t think. The ironic thing is that this weekend, the enrollment department at the college is holding an open house for prospective students. The timing is impeccable. “Welcome to Juniata - situated in historic (and garbage filled) Huntingdon, PA.” Ah, sweet irony.

Hey Tiger.

April 12th, 2005 by knomat

Apple recently announced that Mac OS X Tiger is slated for release on Friday, April 29. I’m particularly excited about Dashboard (Widget Power!), and Safari’s new RSS capabilities. Among the other 200+ new features, the following is a huge “hallelujah” - “AIM Profiles: Easily edit your AIM profile directly from iChat — no need to launch AIM first.” It’s about mofo’ing time! This little feature not being in iChat has always bugged the hell out of me and has been my only gripe with the app. Now, I’ll be content with it. Oh, and there’s also some other little upgrades to the video/audio conferencing features. Meh. No biggie ;)

In other news, I learned of this BEFORE Dave. Mark it down.

I caught you a delicious bass.

April 10th, 2005 by knomat

Hi. I’m still alive. My blog doesn’t reflect this fact, but I am. Promise.

News: I’m going to grad school. George Mason likes me, so they decided to let me into their Instructional Design and Development program. I’d been mulling the idea for about a year, but when I found out they’d pay for my tuition, I jumped on it. So, here I am a month and a half until my first summer class with no place to live in Fairfax. I’ll get right on that. No, really. I’m on it.

I’m quite excited about the program, to say the least. I went down a week or so ago to meet with the current students. I learned of the projects I might be working on and I’m going to learn some really cool stuff. Geek stuff, like web accessibility and advanced instructional design. It excites me. The kind of excitement any web geek would enjoy.

Aside from this … I’ve been traveling lots and lots. I think I’ve put about 2000 miles on my car in the past month. VT, DC x 2, da Burgh … and the random trips around here.

Went to see the sw!ms and Son Zephyr at the Roustabout on Friday night with Jesse (cuz). The sw!ms are always a good time. I say always even though this was my second time seeing them … but I think that warrants an ‘always’. I was particularly interested in Son Zephyr. Jesse told me I’d really like them. I tend to believe him when he says I’d like a band because we share similar musical tastes. They rocked real nice-like. They had a really cool 60’s rock sound. No surprise, since they list the Stones as one of their biggest influences. Good times at the Roustabout.

I’ll be heading back down to Fairfax in May to sit in on the group presentations for the Instructional Design program of this year. The same night at the Black Cat, The Good Life (Tim Kasher’s (of Cursive) side project will be playing). I hope to get down to see that. I’m particularly excited about being in the DC area because of the fact that I’ll be minutes from the 9:30 club and the Black Cat … rather than a 3.5 hour drive with work the next morning.

So … that’s about it. I’m moving to Fairfax in a month.

oh oh … and the delicious bass thing … when i was in pittsburgh this weekend with dave and bridget, dave and i went to a tshirt store … and there was a shirt with a bass on the front that read “I caught you a delicious bass.” We laughed.
